Fire Brigades Union - Firebrigades to Palestine Project
Two fire appliances from Dundee through Europe to Turkey by boat to Lebanon and hopefully permission wil be granted and driven to Nablus through Israel.
The equipment on includes 150 Sets of Bristol Fire Kit, 80 Fire helmets, 80 Pairs of Fire Boots and 100 Pair of Fire Guantlet.
A briefing in Dundee City Chambers yesterday about the Fire Brigades Union initiative to provide fire kit and equipment to Dundee’s twin city of Nablus on the West Bank. Five volunteers will drive the two fire tenders to Nablus. The MSP has tabled a motion at Holyrood on the FBU’s initiative of raising fund to buy two ‘retired’ fire tenders and rescue equipment which volunteers will drive to Nablus in occupied Palestine. He has also arranged for letters of support from the Scottish Parliament for the initiative.
Joe said: “Eight firefighters from Nablus – Dundee’s twin city - benefitted from three weeks of training in Scotland, in 2009, supported by the Scottish Government and the Fire & Rescue Services of Lothians and Borders and Tayside.
“The FBU volunteers will complete this training on-site when they hand over this very badly-needed fire-fighting equipment in Nablus.
“The fire engines will be driven by volunteers through Europe, Turkey and Lebanon to cross into Israel and expect to arrive in Palestine around the 11th or 12th of October.
“This worthy initiative from Scotland will be of great help to the population in Nablus where fires are a daily threat because of the Fire Services’ lack of fire-fighting equipment and will hopefully improve the safety of the population in Dundee’s twin city.”
